ABOUT
The Africa Growth Platform (AGP) is a business community that addresses the unemployment crisis by helping small businesses grow and compete in international markets. It is an initiative of the Forum’s Africa Regional Business Council (RBC) 2018-2019.
Africa is the most entrepreneurial continent with 65% of employment generated through SMEs and 33% Of GDP on average coming from SMEs. And while there are untapped markets with high growth potential, SMEs face a number of barriers which include low start-up skills, lack of dedicated SME funding programs, red tape, complex procurement processes, extended payment of SME invoices, lack of transparent taxation, unclear and unfair investment criteria and lack of investment in stable infrastructure. Hence, the need for an evidence based innovative collaborative approach to help millions of Africa’s entrepreneurs scale up profitably and sustainably, as well as be competitive in international markets.
HOW WE WORK
AGP provides a way to link current initiatives in policy, investment and support to help high potential entrepreneurs reach scale faster. It will do this in three ways:
  • Firstly, by securing commitments from governments to implement policy reforms aimed at stimulating and accelerating business growth.
  • Secondly, by building a community of investors, whether private investors, foundations, multilateral institutions or corporate intrapreneurs to enable better coordination and pooling of resources that could facilitate larger subsequent rounds of funding.
  • Thirdly, by creating and sustaining a community of start-up businesses themselves, promoting collaboration and sharing best practices.
AGP'S THEORY OF CHANGE
  • Be user driven by surveying target SMEs/Startups to determine their top asks of these stakeholders, so that solutions respond to their priorities for scaling up.
  • Build on existing entrepreneurship support initiatives by fostering collaboration between the key stakeholders, and leveraging best practice, in order to increase their collective impact faster.
  • Focus on B2B opportunities in priority industry clusters with high growth potential and global competitiveness.
IMPACT
  • Scaling up will be measured in terms of support that:
    • Drives industry-based growth through public-private dialogue
    • Addresses the specific needs that can enable scalable SMEs/Startups to grow
    • Enhances the ecosystem that enables corporations to integrate the SMEs and Startups into their value and supply chains
  • Success will be measured in terms of the number of new jobs created by the participating SMEs/Startups.
